Sincerely and always, I hate you too. When we meet ROMULUS and AMBER JANE during their final days at boarding school, it’s hard to believe that love has ever existed, but such is the bitter end of most true loves. Small things are said, petty arguments escalate, and after a rapid-fire battle of the sexes, their four-year love affair (with plans to last forever) suddenly collapses. At least, college is around the corner, and the long distance problem is now their greatest asset, since Rome and Amber Jane desperately need to move on.
Now the problem is proximity. Rome and Amber Jane are both going on the same Senior trip to Santa Lorena, a Mediterranean seaside gem of a town, and will be sharing a house for an entire week. Not an optimal arrangement for two people who are trying to get over each other, and really hate each other, and kind of still love each other. But at least Rome is accompanied by his best friend LEO; however, Leo is busy executing his foolproof plan to hook up with CLAIRE, Amber’s free-spirited friend. First step: take Claire on a Vespa ride so that she falls in love when she holds him by the torso. Absurd.
So, Rome travels to Santa Lorena a broken and lonesome man, but his heartbreak quickly turns to indignation when he sees that Amber Jane is oddly cozy with a handsome Italian guy who drives away with her on a classic Vespa. Rome and Leo become suspicious (though Leo is also beguiled by the charming Italian), because it seems like those two know each other, as if they met while Rome and Amber were still dating. Rome’s suspicions are confirmed, but he still doesn’t know if Amber cheated on him or not.
In this tale of self-discovery under the Santa Lorena sun, and the buzzy incantation of orange Aperol Spritz, when supposedly nothing is consequential because their whole lives are still ahead of them, these youths will discover that the old trope isn’t true. Their choices NOW will define them for the rest of their lives, and their fates are are at play during A LITTLE ITALIAN VACATION.
We are an entirely Hispanic filmmaking team (Felipe and Esteban are from Honduras, Jean Michael is from the Dominican Republic, and Martin is from Guatemala) that embarked on an adventure across the Atlantic to the shores of a small Mediterranean town for our first feature film. Our hope was to make an original and BIZARRE comedy, in a stunning foreign location, for a low budget. We are proud to present the results of our little experiment. We hope that you’ll enjoy our film, and that you’ll find it refreshing, outrageous, and a little bit existential.
